Wild dog Delta

Lycaon pictus

Also called the Cape hunting dog, these canids native to sub-Saharan Africa are extremely skilled hunters that work together as a pack. Their scientific name, Lycaon pictus, means painted wolf, and each dog has its own unique colouration like a fingerprint. To capture that, I had fun with these sculptures, allowing the patina process to be free with a lot of chance effect.

Lockdown at the Breede River

We were extremely lucky to spend the first three and a half months of lockdown 2020 in isolation in my favourite place in South Africa – Cape Infanta. Many thanks to my friend Neil (Beetle) for letting us stay in your house.

Red letter day – Grunter heaven

I’ve had a fair bit of luck when it comes to fly fishing, but the spotted grunter (Pomadasys commersonnii), a local saltwater species we target on fly in our estuaries, is another story!

I was inspired to take on this study after attending a couple of polo matches – and most importantly by Edgar Degas’ horse sculptures. The loose sculpting method and use of texture and shadows was intriguing.

African Elephant Bronze Sculpture

Loxodonta africanus

These gentle giants roam the African plains and bushveld in tight-knit families and play an essential role in keeping a balanced ecology. While fly fishing for tigerfish on remote rivers, one often has the pleasure of seeing them up close. This bronze depicts an elephant bull warning off an intruder.
