The Artist

Chris Bladen is a South African artist who expresses his passion for fresh and saltwater fish species in bronze.

At the age of seven he was inspired by a trout, caught on a fly which he tied himself, and ever since, he has chased fish all over the world with fly rod, camera and diving mask.

From a very early age Christopher was exposed to a sculptural environment, as his father owned a stone carving business and nurtured a team of black craftsmen in the art of carving African wildlife. Christopher, being a keen observer, took every opportunity to carve himself, and was soon augmenting his pocket money with innovative creations.

Coerced by the same father into gaining a life-sustaining qualification, he cleverly opted for dental technology, which he studied and completed with a Master Diploma, Cum Laude.

This experience not only gives him invaluable knowledge in wax sculpting, mould making, and precision casting, but also hones his eye for exceptional attention to detail.

Whilst working abroad in this profession, he traveled extensively and gained an expanse of knowledge and visual records of art and fish all over the world.

Returning to South Africa, Christopher decided that the love for re-creating his beloved fish in bronze would be infinitely more satisfying than teeth!

Now based in Cape Town, he creates bronze sculptures with a uniqueness of their own. He captures motion and emotion, and the species specific characteristic appearance in each of his pieces. His deep knowledge and compassion is ultimately evident in his choice and application of patina.

His quest for tangible experience with his subject keeps him traveling to ever new fishing grounds and conditions. He has an ongoing love for the outdoors, always respecting his environment, encouraging fellow fishermen and advocating catch and release ethics.
